May Newsletter
May has started off with a whirlwind of activity around our area. Planters are rolling, cows are going to pasture and lambs are getting weaned.
It is not news that cattle prices are at historic highs and every time we think they cant go higher they do. As the price of cattle keeps climbing it becomes even more necessary than ever to take a look at your current feed program and see if you are doing everything you can for those cattle. If you want us to sit down with you and go over what you are currently doing and look at options to improve efficiency just give me a call and we will be glad to take a look.
In some news that is not as well publicized we are seeing record high prices for weaned pigs and feeder pigs. We have been hearing reports of pig shortages since late last year and it really seems to have gotten worse as a lot of barns are sitting empty in the area for longer than usual. If you look at where October futures are currently this pig shortage has not been factored into the market. With these high priced feeder pigs you want to do everything you can to get them off to a great start, If you are buying feeders and not using Humisyn now is the time to get in touch with us to get it implemented into your program.
Employee Spotlight – Brandon Meitner
I have spent the last few months introducing our other employees around here and decided May would be the month I give you a look into who I am. This month marks 20 years in the feed business for me. I started at St. Ansgar Mills in May of 2006 working in the feed mill, and after 5 years I left to go work for a Minnesota based company as a sales rep. I spent a few years farming and selling feed on the side until coming back to work here 2 years ago. Livestock nutrition is my passion and it has been great being back to the place where I first started buying feed as a 10 year old 4-Her and started my career in the feed business.
I live just 4 miles from the mill on an acreage with my 5 kids where we operate Meitner Family Show Pigs, a 30 sow operation raising crossbred and purebred show pigs that we market across the country. Throughout the spring, summer and fall you will find me at hog shows whether my kids are showing, I’m judging, or I’m there supporting customers.
