March Newsletter
As we roll into March here in the feed department it becomes a busy time for us and our customers. Many of our cow/calf customers are calving right now, there are lots of new lambs and goats being born, baby chicks are in the farm supply stores and many kids are getting their new livestock projects whether it is pigs, goats or lambs.
No matter what scenario you fit into we have the livestock nutrition products for you.
As cows enter their lactation period we are waiting for new grass and currently feeding hay. With the wet weather last summer it was hard to get really good hay put up and some of our customers are feeding up lower quality hay than they are used to. This is a time when a Kent Energilass tub can really help keep those cows in good condition and milking well before they get to pasture.
As we enter into the Midwest show season for pigs, lambs and goats we are stocking up on show feeds and supplements to get your projects off to a great start and keeping them on track all spring and summer. If you have any questions on what you should be feeding your show animals don’t hesitate to reach out.

Product Spotlight
Probably my favorite product I have implemented into my own swine operation is Humisyn from Innovative Solutions. This has been an absolute game changer for me and our customers that have implemented it into their programs.
HumiSyn™ nutrition solutions for swine were developed over multiple years of animal nutrition research identifying the synergetic combination of naturally occurring organic compounds and short-chain fatty acids. Naturally occurring organic acids such as humic and fulvic acid are the two main bioactive ingredients found in humic substance. Humic substances are the result of decomposition of plant, animal and microbial residues over many thousands of years. Humic substances are the main constituents of soil but there are recognized geological formations around the world that are particularly rich in humic substances and are commercially mined for agronomy and for human and animal nutrition. Scientific observations have shown these known benefits of feeding humic substance to animals: • Can help improve intestinal health • Can improve the level of endogenous antioxidant • Can influence a more favorable energy status • Can help mitigate the negative effects of stress • Can bind some mycotoxins present in feed Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid that plays a key role as an energy source for digestive cells. When added to animal feed butyric acid can help improve the gut barrier function and villus height to crypt depth ratio, which can facilitate better nutrient absorption. Additionally butyric acid can help support immune function and help decrease the colonization of pathogenic bacteria in the gut.

Kent Nutrition Group (KNG) is the home of the Kent and Blue Seal quality animal nutrition brands. Kent is the brand serving the Midwest, and Blue Seal is the brand of the Eastern U.S., from Maine to Florida.

We are celebrating over 100 years of providing Smidley products to the livestock industry with one goal in mind: provide products that rate number one in quality, ease of use, and feed savings for livestock producers.
